The History of the Nu Beta Chapter.

Our Story

Our chapter has a long and storied history on the banks of the Raritan.

Nu Beta's history began on October 11, 1909, when a group of men from the Class of 1912 convened at 43 Winants Hall and formed an organization called the Rutgers Silver Fox Club.

In 1910, the name of the group was changed to the Scarlet Society Club.

In 1911, the club leased a new house at 524 George Street and began researching joining a national fraternity. The club chose Phi Gamma Delta, adopted the motto: "Phi Gamma Delta or NOTHING", and vowed to devote its efforts toward obtaining a Charter. During the period of 1912 to 1917, the group pursued the requirements of becoming a chapter by striving to be all it could be. The Scarlet Club soon became one of the leading organizations on campus, ranking among the top four fraternities on the academic level, and producing some of the finest athletes of their time.

The Club's work was rewarded on December 29th, 1917, at the Sixty-Ninth Ekklesia held at the Hotel Astor in New York, when the charter was granted. From then on, the chapter continued to flourish, producing active leaders within the community. It was nothing short of excellence, in every way possible.

The Nu Beta Chapter lost its charter in 2007, but was re-chartered on April 26, 2014.
